Continuum modelling of phase formation

The goal of this project is to gain insights into the pattern formation aspects during the dynamical processes in resistively switching memory materials and therefore to obtain a detailed understanding of the kinetics of writing and erasing data. We address all three material classes of interest in this program, i.e. phase change (PC), valence change (VC) and thermo-chemical (TC) materials, focusing on generic aspects of the switching dynamics. As governing mechanisms phase transformations, thermal and diffusive transport, Joule dissipation, but also elastic effects due to density changes, defect formation and thermal expansion are being studied and simulated using phase field and amplitude equations techniques, as well as analytical methods.
